Program Structure

Continuity Clinic:

Residents gain hands-on experience through consistent patient care in our clinics. Each clinic session includes direct supervision and coaching from seasoned NPs, PAs, or physicians who support residents in building clinical confidence and independence.

 

Specialty Rotations:

The program includes both in-house and community specialty rotations, offering exposure to areas like pediatrics, psychiatry, dermatology, and urology.

 

Didactic Learning:

Structured didactic sessions cover a broad range of primary care topics.

 

Additional Components:

  • Quality Improvement training and project completion

  • Regular case discussions

  • Quarterly Wellness Days

  • Community involvement

  • Responsive resilience support

  • Career development workshops (resume building, interview prep)

  • Progressive Ramp-up of clinical experiences

History:

Heritage Health’s Nurse Practitioner Residency, established in 2023, bridges the gap between education and independent practice. This 13-month program offers hands-on clinical experience, specialty rotations, and dedicated mentorship within an integrated primary care setting at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).

 

Important Dates:

  • Each academic year begins the first week of October

  • Interviews in late February

  • Applications for initial round offers close 2/14/2026. Applications will still be considered on a rolling basis until all positions are filled

  • As an active member of the NWCAPE, our program follows a quasi-match system unique to the Pacific Northwest. This means that our application opening and closing dates as well as offer date aligns with other participating programs.

 

Eligibility:

  • Interested in gaining primary care experience working in a community health center setting

  • MSN or DNP graduate from a CCNE or ACEN accredited Family Nurse Practitioner program

  • Must be licensed in Idaho and credentialed by program start date

  • Must have obtained a certification and license to practice not longer than 18 months before the start of the residency program

Puntuación HPSA de atención primaria de Heritage Health: 18

Este atributo representa la puntuación del Área de escasez de profesionales sanitarios (HPSA) desarrollada por el Cuerpo Nacional de Servicios de Salud (NHSC) para determinar las prioridades en la asignación de médicos. Las puntuaciones van de 0 a 25, donde cuanto mayor sea la puntuación, mayor será la prioridad.

Como participante del LRP S2S del NHSC, debe trabajar en un sitio aprobado por el NHSC con un puntaje de Área de escasez de profesionales de la salud (HPSA) de 14 o más. Heritage Health tiene un puntaje HSPA de atención primaria de 18 a partir de noviembre de 2022.

I don’t graduate until a few months before the start of the residency. Can I still apply?

Yes, but you must be licensed and credentialed in Idaho by the program start date. 

What is the main purpose of an NP Residency?

The main purpose of a Nurse Practitioner (NP) Residency is to bridge the gap between education and independent clinical practice by providing newly graduated NPs with structured, hands-on training and mentorship. Residents will benefit from didactic sessions, a ramp-up schedule to ease their transition, and a dedicated preceptor during continuity clinic, ensuring comprehensive support as they build confidence and refine their clinical skills in a supportive environment.

 

Are residents employees of Heritage Health?

Yes, Residents are temporary full-time employees and receive both a salary and benefits. Additionally, accepted residents are eligible for reimbursement of licensure fees.

 

How many residency positions are available each year?

There are currently four residency positions available each academic year.

 

Is there an option or an obligation for a second year in the residency program?

The residency program is 13 months beginning in October.

 

Are residents hired at Heritage Health upon completion of the program?

Residents are encouraged to apply for positions at Heritage Health, but it is not expected, nor is a position guaranteed.
